Introduction

  1. Theme: is faith - but is it here?
  2. Yes: 4 reasons why it is here.
  3. 4 ways in which Christ is ours.
  1. CHRIST IS OUR WISDOM

    *"...made unto us wisdom". Definition.
    1. We are foolish in spiritual things before we come to faith in Christ: (i) we do not know our own hearts (ii) where this came from (iii) or why we die, etc.
      Illustration: "Are we born good?"
      APPLICATION: Does it HURT to be called a "sinner" - if so we have not really understood the gospel.
    2. Christ teaches us wisdom - we get His "mind"
      1. to know ourselves as God sees us.
      2. the Moral Law comes to life (Romans 7:7-13)
      3. conscience begins to do its duty.
      APPLICATION: Why do people weep?
      Answer: at what they see.
  2. CHRIST IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

    * "...righteousness". Definition.
    1. There are 2 forms of righteousness:
      1. the attribute of God - He demands perfection.
      2. the gift of God - which gives what He requires.
      3. Augustine's prayer: "Grant what Thou commandest".
    2. How Christ obtained this righteousness:
      1. He became our public representative
      2. He lived a vicarious life
      3. He died a vicarious death
      4. He gives Himself to be "The Lord our righteousness".
    3. Biblical illustrations ("seamless robe")
      1. Adam: his garments of skin
      2. Isaac: the substituted ram, etc.
      APPLICATION: consider: "in Christ" (Noah's ark)
  3. CHRIST IS OUR SANCTIFICATION

    * "...sanctification". Definition.
    1. The difference between Justification and this:
      ILLUSTRATION: a pardoned criminal - dressed.
    2. Sanctification is "being made pure" - not just a legal / forensic thing. How?
      1. grace reigns - sin has no dominion
      2. our will is inclined to holiness now
      3. we love God's law: see Psalm 119
      4. a new motive of love to Christ
      5. God, not self is at the centre
      ILLUSTRATION: The discovery of Copernicus
      APPLICATION: Have you undergone this Copernican revolution?
  4. CHRIST IS OUR REDEMPTION

    * "...and redemption". Definition.
    1. Sometimes in reference to conversion & grace; but here, I think, to our final state.
      ILLUSTRATION: December 21st spring & summer!
    2. This full salvation is the state of glory:
      1. To be entirely & eventually perfect
      2. To be perfectly & eventually happy
      3. To be complete: redeemed soul and body
      4. To be in the presence of God
      5. In a word: unity/love/glory
      APPLICATION: Whom have we thank for all this? Ourselves? No!

CONCLUSION

But God and Christ, as here:
"Of him are ye in Christ Jesus".
Our reaction? To "glory in the Lord".
