Introduction

  1. This chapter takes us from Adam to the Flood of Noah's day.
  2. That was a long period of time.
  3. All these names are those of our ancestors!
  1. "THE BOOK OF THE GENERATIONS OF ADAM"

There are 10 such "generations" in Genesis. Examples: 2:4; 6:9; 37:2.
The term "generations" is used loosely - to summarise the subject dealt with.
Ten patriarchs up to the Flood.
    World population increased very rapidly.
OBSERVE: The Covenant of Grace is seen here.

  2. SOME OBVIOUS QUESTIONS

    1. Cain's Wife: a frequent objection.
See v.4: he married a sister.
The 'forbidden degrees' - from Moses' time.
    2. The length of the lives of Antediluvians
      This seems amazing to us: Adam = 930; Methuselah = 969; Noah = 950 (Genesis 9:29).
      The explanation.
    3. What about the dinosaurs?
      See Job 41 re. Leviathan.
There were many types in the fossil record.
But why do they not live today?
  3. THIS CHAPTER IS CONFINED TO THE GODLY LINE

The two families on the earth (i) that of Seth (ii) that of Cain. Their real difference: (i) their faith (ii) their attitude to life as a whole. SUM: God-centred v. man-centred.
    APPLICATION:

  4. THE PATRIARCH ENOCH: v.18-24

    1. "he walked with God". Meaning.
      APPLICATION:
    2. "he was not" = "was translated that he should not see death" (Hebrews 11:5).
    3. his "faith", by which he "pleased God".
    4. "God took him".
APPLICATION: So will all the godly be treated.
DOCTRINE: God "takes" his people in death.
  5. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FAMILY

"begat sons and daughters" - repeated.
In obedience to God's will: "Be fruitful".
APPLICATION: The Christian family a wonderful thing.
DOCTRINE: In evil days the Christian family can be a place of safety and a nursery of true piety.

  6. THE PROPHECY CONCERNING NOAH: v. 29

This was an inspired prophecy. The name of NOAH means "Rest", "Comfort".
OBSERVE: God gave prophecies in these days. What does the prophecy mean?
APPLICATION: Noah, like Christ, gives "rest". However burdened we are in this sinful world, Christ can give us rest". (See Matthew 11:28-30)

LESSONS

  1. We may find life long - but it is not so long for us as for the patriarchs.
  2. Noah is a type of Christ. The Church is God's Ark of Safety.
APPLICATION: Are you in the ark?
