Introduction

  1. What a scene!
  2. What a moment!
  3. What a prophecy!
  1. IF WE ARE CHRIST-LIKE WE SHALL WEEP OVER THE SAD STATE OF GRACELESS MEN

    1. Christ not weeping for himself/his disciples.
    2. But for "the city" = Jerusalem.
    3. I give reasons for this spectacle:
      1. They had had a privileged history.
      2. They had Bibles and a place to worship.
      3. They had had great preachers.
      4. They had a Saviour offered to them.
BUT - now they had rejected God.
    4. As a consequence, God was soon to punish:
      1. v.43: "the days shall come".
      2. "enemies, trench", even with the ground..."
OBSERVE: Christ saw the judgement to come on them.
    5. Those who are spiritual see what is to come on every unbeliever:
      1. All his happiness will come to an end.
      2. He will have to face God at last.
      3. No words can express the sinner's eternal misery (See Christ's words).
APPLICATION: O friends, let us learn from this great Saviour how to think of lost sinners!
  2. SEE HOW FULL OF LOVE AND PITY CHRIST IS TOWARDS THOSE WHO ARE UNSAVED

    1. "he wept over it": not just the destruction of walls, houses and Temple - but men.
    2. Christ, as the God-Man here shows what the attitude of God is towards lost souls in this life - these tears show the love of God:
      1. God delights in the salvation of sinners and not in their death. So Ezekiel makes clear.
      2. God is sincere in all His promises of life and forgiveness - He means them and He gives them to us all: "Come...rest".
      3. These promises are well-meant both to those who believe them and those who do not. Illustration: a man who offers a gift.
      4. These tears were real expressions of love to all sinners - they move us to see how ready He is to welcome all who come.
APPLICATION: Now you know how welcome you are.
    3. We admit there are mysteries here:election - the eternal decree"no man can come..."a limited atonement. But yet - "Whosoever will."
      ILLUSTRATION: Bunyan's "Come and Welcome".
APPLICATION: If men persist, it is because they will not come. O the folly of it!
  3. THESE TEARS ARE A POWERFUL ARGUMENT TO EVERY SINNER TO COME TO CHRIST

    1. They demonstrate that He is ready to be your Saviour: "Let me suffer for you".
Illustration: a hen and her brood.
    2. These tears answer every doubt:
      1. "I am too sinful".
      2. "I am not elected".
      3. "I have no warrant to come".
      4. "He may not want me".
      5. See how He is yearning over the lost. "Why will ye die?"
    3. ILLUSTRATION: a "sick" man in bed - advice from his doctor!
    4. APPLICATION: Do you still harden your heart?

CONCLUSION

Final warnings.
