Introduction

  1. An experience here.
  2. What was it? Conversion?
  3. There are experiences all our life.
  1. THE WAY IN WHICH JACOB FACED HIS FEARS

    1. The approach of Esau - a grave fear.
    2. Memories of the past - now rise up again.
    3. The defensive action which he takes.
    4. But - his special resort to prayer.

    LESSONS

    1. God's people have many fears in this life
    2. Our supreme defence - prayer
    3. Assurance of God's care (texts).
  2. JACOB'S EXPERIENCE WITH THE ANGEL

    1. Alone with God - a good experience.
      APPLICATION: Make time for this, as Christ did.
    2. This Angel - who?
    3. The ministry of the angels - not to be forgotten by us:
      (i) Psalm 34 (ii) Elisha (iii) Christ (iv) Paul on board ship
    4. The Wrestling experience - why?
    5. How could Jacob win?
      OBSERVE: Faith the secret of a believer's victory over all his evils.
  3. THE WEAKNESS WHICH JACOB RECEIVED

    1. A painful victory - he limped away.
    2. The thigh that was damaged and the respect paid to it by his descendants.
      OBSERVE: To respect our fathers in the faith.

    LESSONS:

    1. God weakens us for our good: Psalm 102
    2. Sanctification includes weaknesses.
    3. Blessing may come with pain too.
  4. JACOB'S VICTORY OVER ALL HIS FEARS

    1. Not "Jacob" but "Israel". Explain.
    2. "He blessed him there" - wonderful!
    3. The fears of Jacob are now conquered.

    LESSONS

    1. The battle with our fears is a very real one. ("Yesterday's and tomorrow's).
    2. The victory over our fears is gained in the secret place of prayer.
    3. Every battle won is a princely crown to our soul's sanctification.

CONCLUSION

All who win through to the end will be princes with Christ forever!
