Introduction
- A prophecy here.
- This is the end of history.
- It concerns Christ our Saviour.
WE LEARN HERE THE MANNER OF CHRIST'S COMING
- "with clouds": (i) from heaven (ii) with evident marks of divinity.Recall the "clouds" of Scripture.
OBSERVE: How different the 1st from 2nd coming! - The Bible gives us further details:
- the 2nd coming will be sudden, like a thief.
- there will be the sound of the trumpet and shout.
- there will be a flash like the lightening.
- the elements will melt...all pass away.
- fire will consume all the filth of this world.
APPLICATION: We dare not be ignorant of all this.
- "with clouds": (i) from heaven (ii) with evident marks of divinity.Recall the "clouds" of Scripture.
WE LEARN WHO IT IS THAT SHALL SEE HIM
- First: "every eye" = all who have ever lived:
- because all the dead shall be raised.
- and all the living will be astonished
ILLUSTRATION: Not all see Royal events - but all will see this.
APPLICATION: No one will then be blind - all will see!
- Second: "those who pierced him":
- the unbelieving Jews of His day: "Not this man but Barabbas!" "His blood be on us".
- all unbelievers - like Pilate.
- all Christians: who long for His coming.
APPLICATION: Do you pray for this? "Even so come..." "This is our God, we have waited for Him".
- First: "every eye" = all who have ever lived:
WE DISCOVER WHAT SORT OF WELCOME HE WILL HAVE
- "all kindreds shall wail" = howl, cry, weep, gnash their teeth, scream, smite their breasts...
OBSERVE: (i) They will be entirely unprepared. (ii) They have no love for Christ or the Cross! - Why do they wail?
- because all that they feared is true.
- and now all that they loved is at an end.
- Men will wish to hide - but there is no place
- Will they go to the moon? - no.
- Or to the stars? - they are falling.
- Under the hills? - they cannot defend them.
- This is why Christ's words are vital for us to obey:
"Watch and pray". "Why sleep ye?"
APPLICATION: Let us "make ourselves ready" (Revelation 19:7)
- "all kindreds shall wail" = howl, cry, weep, gnash their teeth, scream, smite their breasts...
BUT HOW DIFFERENT IT WILL BE FOR CHRISTIANS
- The Christian is ready for His coming at any time:
ILLUSTRATION: A question to J. Wesley. - The Christian is prepared:
- his heart is right
- he watches and prays daily
- he loves and serves Christ
Q. Is this true of you?
- Happy is this great Day for Christians:the resurrection to glory - not "ashamed".the judgement of rewards.the wedding-feast: His love for ever!
OBSERVE: "Blessed are ye that weep NOW..."
- The Christian is ready for His coming at any time:
CONCLUSION
See now why Christ speaks as He does: Luke 6:20-26
